Writer feels media prevented fair trial

The verdict came in: guilty as sin.

I refer to the recent child sex abuse case against Carol Hann and Robert Caravella of Plymouth. Over the past year, the local media really milked this story for all it was worth. Unless you just landed in the Wyoming Valley from a distant galaxy, you've been fed this story a few dozen times in newspaper headlines and in top stories on the local TV evening news. Yes, some investigative journalists are going to win some awards and advance their careers. But also, two defendants are facing long prison sentences.

I do not condone child abuse of any kind, but considering all the media frenzy surrounding this case, I find it hard to believe that these defendants received a fair trial . We've been suffering too long from a corrupt and flawed criminal justice system. We're pinning the future of our justice system on newly elected judges and on an energetic young district attorney. We've come too far and have too much emotional and intellectual energy invested to allow the well-meaning overzealous media to cloud our sense of judgment and justice.

It's great to sell newspapers and to boost TV ratings, but can we expect anyone accused of a heinous crime to receive a fair hearing? I thought the job of a professional journalist is not to sensationalize the news, but to report the news accurately, fairly and responsibly. If these defendants are truly guilty, yes, I agree they should receive harsh sentences.

I hope these defendants can find a good knowledgeable apellant attorney who would be willing to re-examine the facts surrounding this case.

A Christmas salute to all our veterans

As District 12 American Legion Luzerne County Department of Pennsylvania Commander, I would like to wish all Legion members and their families, along with the Sons of The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary in Luzerne County a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Also, I hope those veterans who are away from home, come home safe. I would also like to say how proud I am of my comrades. American Legion posts of Luzerne County put in so many volunteer hours to help veterans in need, supporting local school programs and the community. A big salute to every one of them !

If you are a war veteran, become a member.
