(AP) New Jersey shore hero Bruce Springsteen is the opening act in a benefit concert to help neighbors in the New York metropolitan area hit hard by Superstorm Sandy.

Springsteen and his E Street Band began Wednesday's concert with a roar and call to arms in Land of Hope and Dreams and Wrecking Ball.

Springsteen is among many artists with ties to the area scheduled to be onstage at Madison Square Garden for the concert, also featuring Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, Alicia Keys and the Rolling Stones.

The sold-out show is being broadcast worldwide on television, in theaters, online and on radio.

From ticket sales alone, the concert already has raised more than $30 million to help Sandy victims in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The October storm left millions of people without heat or electricity for weeks.
