Nikki Higgins, a senior at West Side Career and Technology Center, was selected as the Student of the Month for December. She was honored based on her outstanding attributes in and out of the classroom. Higgins is in the computer technology program. She plans on attending an institution of higher learning and majoring in singing and musical composition. She is the daughter of Nathan and Cindy Higgins, Larksville.



Harold Roberts, a senior at Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, has been named a 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Outstanding Participant. Roberts, the son of Marion Bell, New York, N.Y., is among 3,100 Outstanding Participants in the National Achievement Scholarship Program being referred to U.S. colleges and universities. These students scored in the top three percent of more than 160,000 students who requested consideration in the 2013 National Achievement Program.



Leah Goldberg, Wilkes-Barre, and Spencer Norris, Kingston, seniors at Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship competition. Commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.



Marsha Murphy,
Amanda Stitzer and Victoria Vetter, all students at Penn State Hazleton, are recipients of the 2012/2013 CAN DO Community Foundation Scholarship.


Murphy, the daughter of Andrea Lovett, Sugarloaf, is a sophomore studying business. She is a 2011 graduate of Hazleton Area High School.


Stitzer is an adult student majoring in psychology. She is a consistent dean's list student and was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda national adult learner honor society in spring 2012. She will graduate in 2013 and plans to pursue an advanced degree. Stitzer, Sheppton, is employed at the Schuylkill Medical Center South and has two children, Paige, 6, and Jason, 4.


Vetter is a freshman pursuing a career in health care. She is a 2012 graduate of Marian Catholic High School and the daughter of Dawn and Harold Vetter, Hazleton.



Dr. Sherry Brown, a Wilkes-Barre native, recently received the Young Alumnus Award at University of the Sciences' Alumni Reunion. The award is presented to an individual who is younger than 40 years old; graduated from the university within the last 15 years; and contributed in an outstanding fashion to the profession, science and mankind. Brown is a co-founder of RxPrep, which offers educational tools to pharmacy students preparing for their licensure examinations. RxPrep educates more than 10,000 pharmacy students annually. Brown also serves as a voluntary clinical professor at University of California, San Diego. Following her graduation from USciences, Brown completed a pharmacy practice residency at Duke University Medical Center and a critical care pharmacy residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. She also earned her health care executive Master of Business Administration degree from University of California Irvine.
