‘Vote' will get screening

The Department of Communications at Misericordia University will offer a special screening of its recently completed documentary Vote at 6 p.m. on Jan. 30 in the McGowan Room of the Mary Kintz Bevevino Library.

Melissa Sgroi, department chair, and Dan Kimbrough, assistant professor, traveled throughout the Wyoming Valley during the Nov. 6 general election to gauge whether polling places met Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and did not inhibit any members of the electorate from casting ballots in the presidential election.

They said the video sheds light on barriers to voting for people with disabilities that have not been widely reported.

The professors accompanied a physically challenged college student and his mother to a polling place and talked to election officials, a state official and others to see why these obstacles have not been corrected at polling places.

BUCK TOWNSHIP
Transco to do upgrades

Transco interstate pipeline operator Williams is moving forward with compressor upgrades at its facility in Buck Township.

The state Department of Environmental Protection said this week it intends to issue a plan approval for upgrades at the facility, which include the installation of an additional 16,000-horsepower compressor turbine. The turbine installation was approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in November.

The installation is part of a larger series of upgrades that will allow Transco to increase the flow of natural gas traveling through the line, spurred by an increase in gas supply from the Marcellus Shale. It will boost the facility's compressor power by 50 percent, from 32,000 to 48,000 horsepower.

DEP noted the turbine will increase noise and carbon monoxide emissions at the facility. Transco said it will not increase noise levels at the facility's borders.

A department spokeswoman said a public hearing could be held on the upgrade if requested by citizens, but so far, there have been no requests.
