BERWICK -- Usually, having an extra player on the field is a great way to generate offense.

Tuesday night, power plays were little more than blips on the screen of a dramatic game, won by Crestwood 3-2 over District 3 runner-up Greenwood.

The state Class 2A semifinal was a spirited, though cleanly played, contest throughout. But as the game wore on, cards turned from green to yellow, sending players to the sideline for five minute penalties.

The District 2 champions had a pair of power plays -- one to finish regulation and another four and a half minutes into the first overtime, yet came away without a marker. Greenwood enjoyed a power play late in the first overtime, also going scoreless.

Their defensive game ... they played really outstanding defense, Greenwood coach Kent Houser said of Crestwood. It's definitely a credit to both teams for how well they played. To play shorthanded in 7s and not give up a goal is amazing.

The extra player was hardly an advantage to the two powerhouses. During Greenwood's two shorthanded opportunities, the Wildcats outshot the Comets 3-1 and earned one more penalty corner (3-2) than Crestwood.

When Crestwood was a player down, the Comets were awarded four penalty corners and they held Greenwood without an offensive opportunity.

Both goalies -- Crestwood's Dallas Kendra and Greenwood's Katie Osborne -- bailed out their teams with big saves during the man-up play.

That's the flow of the game in overtime with the openings, Crestwood coach Elvetta Gemski said.

Greenwood was effective shutting down attack lanes and forcing long outlets to open space by the Comets. When Crestwood was down a player, it simply put the ball into the Wildcats circle and kept drawing fouls.

In the end, Crestwood was able to get the only goal of 7-on-7 play to advance to face the Hurricanes of Villa Maria. And it came with seven players on the field for both squads because of their effective special teams play.
