PITTSTON TWP. -- The Board of Supervisors on Monday night unanimously adopted a $2.2 million 2013 budget with no property tax increase, an upgrade of equipment, and a 3.5 percent salary increase for employees, excluding supervisors.

Financial administrator John Bonita said the township was especially pleased it was able to continue to offer quality services to its residents.

For example, Bonita said, the township absorbs the cost of garbage collection, with only a $5 fee billed to residents, and also contributes to ambulance fees.

In another matter, the board approved Robert Avvisato Jr. as police chief, a position that had previously been vacant. The annual salary is $40,000.

Supervisor Ron Marcellini said he was glad the position was filled. He said members were now on the same page in regard to the value and structure of having a police chief as head of the department.

Also, Bonita said the township was not yet current on tax collection for 2012. He said he anticipated a shortage of $150,000 to $200,000 would be resolved within the next six to eight months.

Resident Anna Dunn asked board members the reason the zoning board failed to grant her permit to rebuild her garage after it was destroyed by fire. She believes the fire to be arson.

Zoning Officer Terry Best said the zoning board had reviewed the application in compliance with township regulations.

WHAT'S NEXT

The next meeting of the township will take place on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
