HOLLENBACK TWP. – State police in Hazleton are investigating a case of theft by deception.

Police said the incident occurred after Richard Jensen, 56, of Wapwallopen, lost a bid for a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS on eBay – an online auction.

Jensen told police he later received an email telling him that the car was relisted on eBay and provided him a link to what appeared to be an eBay web page. He clicked the link and entered a $9,680 bid on the car, was told he won the bid and directed to wire transfer the money to JP Morgan Chase Bank in Bountiful, Utah.

The suspect advised Jensen the car would be shipped within 10 days, but the car never arrived. Jensen called eBay and was told the car was not an eBay item and that he was scammed.

EBay advises that this scam occurs hundreds – if not thousands – of times each day, and the public is reminded to confirm website purchases with the website directly and not just trust that a website link is legitimate.

An investigation continues.

HANOVER TWP. – Police said they are investigating an attempted use of counterfeit currency at the UCFW Credit Union on the Sans Souci Parkway Friday.

Police said a male customer attempted to deposit a counterfeit bill into his bank account, which the teller immediately identified as a fake bill. Police did not say the denomination of the bill or whether an arrest was made.

• A 13-year-old female reported to police that her Motorola cell phone was stolen from an apartment in Marion Terrace.

The suspect was a thin male about 6 feet tall wearing all black clothing. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

• Hazle Township resident Justin Nodes and two 16-year-old boys will be charged with criminal attempt to commit burglary, criminal trespass, loitering, criminal mischief and prowling at night for allegedly attempting to break into a house in the 660 block of Lincoln Street around 9 p.m. Saturday. Nodes also will be charged with two counts of corruption of minors.

BUTLER TWP. – Olivia Gregory, 21, of Hazleton, was cited with careless driving after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 around 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to state police.

Police say Gregory lost control of her Chevrolet Malibu and hit an Acura driven by Emanuel Oloruntola, 27, of Valley Stream, N.Y., as they were headed north. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and Oloruntola was transported to Hazleton General Hospital for a medical evaluation.
