HAZLETON ?? Firefighters spent hours extinguishing a blaze at a five-unit apartment building at the corner of Green and North Cedar streets Sunday, said city Fire Chief Donald Leshko.

The American Red Cross is assisting 11 displaced residents of the building, he said. One occupant was treated and released from Hazleton General Hospital for breathing in smoke, and a firefighter also was treated for facial injuries caused by broken glass, he said.

Fire crews had to cut open the roof because the fire was on the third floor, and the older building had a tin roof topped with wood and a mix of shingles and tar paper, he said.

??It was just a stubborn fire,? Leshko said.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown, he said. A state police fire marshal was at the scene Sunday and will return to investigate today with city police and firefighters, he said.

HAZLE TWP. ?? Two Hazleton residents were cited with retail theft after an alleged theft of two Christmas trees displayed in front of Walmart around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, state police said.

According to police, Durain Dino Nika, 34, and Radovanka Nika, 65, parked in the fire lane in front of the store, removed price tags from two trees and placed them in their truck bed. When a door greeter approached them asking to see the receipt, they left without providing a receipt or paying $39.98 plus tax for each of the trees, police said.

Guided by a license plate number retrieved as they fled the scene, state police troopers located the vehicle double-parked in front of a residence in the 800 block of Vine Street, Hazleton, and recovered the trees in the truck bed, police said.
