WILKES-BARRE – Police said they used a Taser to subdue a man early Saturday morning during an arrest in the area of Coal and North Empire streets.

While working a detail at the Sherman Hills complex at 2:48 a.m. officers Jeffrey Ference and Joseph Sinavage saw a taxi with its emergency, four-way hazard lights on parked in the area of Coal and North Empire streets. As the officers approached to check on the occupants, a man opened the door and got out of the back seat of the taxi. The man began fighting with the officers who used a Taser to subdue and take him into custody.

The man had seven working cellphones, suspected marijuana and crack cocaine, cash and a pistol in his boot, police said. He was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township for treatment.

PLAINS TWP. – Kenneth Stephens of Courtright Street was charged with simple assault, harassment and resisting arrest Saturday after a domestic disturbance at his residence, police said.

Police were called at 12:38 a.m. to the residence, where Donna Stephens said her husband punched her in the face, police said.

Police said she had signs of physical abuse. Kenneth Stephens was arrested and became combative, police said. He was taken to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for an arraignment.
