Protests continue at shuttered S. African mine

(AP) Machete-wielding miners are continuing their protest at a shuttered South African platinum mine.

The workers again massed Wednesday on a rocky hillside in sight of the smokestacks at the Lonmin PLC platinum mine near Marikana, about 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Johannesburg. They chanted, danced and carried machetes, clubs and other weapons in view of watching police officers.

The police allowed the protest to continue as negotiations occurred away from the protest.

The protest and ensuing violence, which began Friday, has killed at least 10 people there, including two police officers. It's also drastically affected production at a crucial mine for Lonmin, the world's third largest producer of platinum.
