(AP) A piece of World War II history will be auctioned on the 67th anniversary of V-J Day.
It's a naval dispatch announcing the end of hostilities with Japan. It was received aboard the USS Holland on Aug. 15, 1945, days after the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
A crewman kept the historic 8-inch-by-6.5-inch dispatch in a shoebox for more than six decades. His son, Bob York, says he hopes the document will be snatched up by a museum or someone with a deep appreciation of World War II history.
The auction will be held in Millville, Pa., on Aug. 15. It includes other World War II-era documents and photographs taken by York's father, who died in February at age 91. He had lived in Stoneham, Mass.
