WILKES-BARRE ‚?? A woman who had to have a knife surgically removed from her head after she was repeatedly stabbed will have to wait until the end of the month for her attacker‚??s sentencing.

Luzerne County Judge David W. Lupas on Tuesday postponed the sentencing for Joseph Dunaj, 28, of Luzerne to allow his attorney, Nanda Palissery, and prosecutors to settle a dispute with a pre-sentence report.

Hanover Township police charged Dunaj after he attacked his girlfriend, Lisa Scoffone, inside her Marion Terrace apartment on March 6.

Dunaj forced his way into the apartment by smashing a window and stabbed Scoffone multiple times in the head, face and torso, police said. When Scoffone‚??s grandmother intervened, she suffered an arm injury when Dunaj shoved her, police said.

In a negotiated plea deal, Dunaj pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, and prosecutors withdrew a second aggravated assault charge, including burglary, criminal trespass, simple assault, criminal mischief and harassment.

Scoffone said during Tuesday‚??s proceeding that Dunaj stabbed her in front of her two children. ‚??I really do not want to face this guy,‚?Ě said Scoffone. ‚??It was a very brutal thing he did to me.‚?Ě

Scoffone said she suffered stab wounds to her chest that punctured both lungs. She also suffered injuries on her neck, both ears and on her scalp.

The knife had to be surgically removed from her head at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, she said, where she was a patient for more than a month after the attack.

The attack left her with numerous scars on her face, neck and torso, and she continues to have pain using three fingers that were severely slashed, she said.

‚??I suffered extremely to what this man did to me,‚?Ě Scoffone said. ‚??He‚??s not fit to walk the streets; he needs to go to prison for the maximum amount of time. There is a reason why I‚??m still here. I believe in God.‚?Ě

Lupas said Dunaj will be sentenced on Jan. 28.
