WILKES-BARRE - Police have a suspect in custody following a stabbing this evening on South Hancock Street.

Police and an ambulance were dispatched to 310 S. Hancock St. at 9:11 p.m. for a report of a woman stabbed in her leg, according to a Luzerne County 911 supervisor.

According to scanner reports and neighbors, the male suspect fled. A man was apprehended by police within 10 to 15 minutes about a block and a half away in a residential back yard between South Hancock Street and Park Avenue.

A police sergeant confirmed that the stabbing suspect was in custody but he would release no further details.

Neighbors who live near the scene of the stabbing said the suspect, whom they saw flee, lives at 310 S. Hancock.

A 911 supervisor said the stabbing victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Police said it was unlikely additional details would be released tonight.
