Teen gets 10-20 years for shooting

WILKES-BARRE – A 19-year-old charged with shooting and injuring two people in August 2009 was sentenced Friday to 10 to 20 years in state prison.

Jquan Humphrey, with no last known address, was sentenced by Judge Michael Vough on four counts of aggravated assault stemming from the incident that left Camille Mayhems and Tory Medley with gunshot wounds.

Humphrey was 16 at the time of the shooting.

By the grace of God, (Medley) is not dead, Vough told Humphrey before handing down his sentence.

Mayhems was shot in the foot during the incident on Hutson and Metcalf streets in Wilkes-Barre, while Medley was shot in the arm and chest.

Humphrey said he has been trying to get his life back on track, attending counseling and other programs at the county prison and has learned from his actions.

What I did wasn't right, Humphrey said. I want to try and better myself …

Assistant District Attorney Mamie Phillips said Humphrey is an admitted member of the Bloods street gang, and has a long history of violating the law, including most recently being lodged at Rikers Island in New York City on drug charges.

The prosecutor asked Vough to consider imposing the maximum allowable sentence because of Humphrey's past and recent charges.

Humphrey's attorney, John Pike, acknowledge his clients significant history of juvenile charges, but said Humphrey has accepted responsibility in the case by pleading guilty.

There is no denial of the offenses that got him here, Pike said.

Humphrey's previous attorney had sought to have their client's case heard in juvenile court, but a judge ruled Humphrey would be tried as an adult.

Medley was present at Friday's hearing and briefly spoke about the injuries he received.

According to court papers, police investigated the report of gunfire at 45 Hutson St. and learned Mayhems and Medley suffered gunshot wounds.

Police learned there was a confrontation involving juveniles near Wilkes-Barre Boulevard and Hazle Avenue, and a second fight in the area of Hutson and Metcalf streets.

When the second fight ended, two people chased Humphrey, also known as J-Money.

Humphrey ran away and yelled he was going to get a gun and come back to shoot y'all (expletive), the criminal complaint says.

Police said Humphrey arrived at the Hutson Street house with a firearm.

When people on the porch, including Mayhems, realized Humphrey had a gun, they began to run inside the house; Mayhems was shot in the foot.

Medley attempted to talk to Humphrey, but after saying one or two words, Humphrey aimed the gun at him, firing a round, hitting Medley in the arm and chest.

Police say they recovered two spent shell casings to a .40-caliber handgun and two projectiles on the porch of the house.

Humphrey also was sentenced Friday on an unrelated charge of assault by prisoner in an incident in which police say Humphrey assaulted a hall monitor at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in October 2011.

Vough said that 18-to-36-month prison sentence would run concurrently to the 10-to-20-year sentence.
