Our most beloved Father George Dimopoulos, parish priest of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Wilkes-Barre, fell asleep with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at his home in Upper Darby, Pa.

He was born in Polyrraxo, Greece, on July 28, 1929, to parents Nicholas and Eleni Dimopoulos. He was a graduate of Halki Theological Seminary in Constantinople and was ordained on Aug. 31, 1957. After graduation, he married Thalia Efremides and had two beautiful children, Athenagoras and Helen. He distinguished himself over his 55-year priestly ministry as a pastor and teacher. For 30 years, he taught at St. Savonarola Seminary and at St. Tikhon's Theological Seminary. He authored and translated 13 books, and, throughout his career, wrote weekly columns for several Greek newspapers. He also gave weekly sermons on the radio which were broadcast internationally.

He served many communities including Toronto, Canada; New York; Upper Darby; Scranton; and Wilkes-Barre. He was deeply involved in missionary work in Kodiak, Alaska; Ghana; Tanzania; Uganda, Africa; and Calcutta, India. He spent 21 years at the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Scranton. He then moved on to Upper Darby for the next 12 years. These last 14 years of his ministry, Father George tended to his brothers and sisters in Christ at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre, where he will be missed deeply.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Helen, in 2010.

He is survived by his wife, Thalia; son and daughter-in-law, Artemis and Athenagoras (Arthur) Dimopoulos; son-in-law, Rick Kostes; beloved grandchildren, Thalia Dimopoulos; Alexandra, Arienne, Christian, George and Thalia Kostes.
