(AP) Police in South Africa say robbers posing as visitors to an art museum stole more than $2 million worth of art from an exhibit near the country's capital.

Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale of the South African Police Service said the robbery happened Sunday at the Pretoria Art Museum. She said the three robbers paid $2.25 for their tickets, then walked inside and pulled out pistols.

Authorities say the thieves went after specific paintings worth more than $2 million before escaping in a silver sedan. Mogale said authorities had been put on alert to watch for the paintings in case someone tried to flee the country with them.

The thieves apparently abandoned stealing a painting by famous South African artist Irma Stern because they couldn't fit it in their getaway car.
