WILKES-BARRE – The draw pitted Wyoming Valley Conference against Lackawanna Conference opponents on all four courts, and it didn't look good for the top WVC girls tennis stars.
All four WVC Class 2A quarterfinalists found themselves in danger of being shut out by their northern neighbors.
Wyoming Seminary's Nathalie Joanlanne and Anita Ghosh overcame early first-set deficits to advance to Monday's District 2 Class 2A singles semifinal round.
The pair, along with Crestwood's Kristi Bowman in 3A, will compete Monday at 1 p.m. at Kirby Park or, if in case of inclement weather, at Birchwood Tennis & Fitness in Clarks Summit.
Ghosh, a four seed, found herself shut out in the first set of her quarterfinal matchup with fifth-seeded Abriana Nolan, of Honesdale.
"It was tough," Ghosh said. "It was nerves a little bit. I've never been to singles districts before. It was nerves but I came through."
Ghosh recovered to triumph 6-2, 6-3 in the second and third sets, respectively, to advance to the final day of competition for the first time in her career.
"I really went out there and tried to start over, completely pretend that never happened because I knew I had two more sets," she said. "I started serving and volleying, and it worked out."
Second-seeded Joanlanne found herself with more than she bargained with Valley View's Amber Jadus. Jadus jumped out to a 5-2 lead before Joanlanne was able to adjust and come back to win the set 7-6 (5). She won the second set by 6-4 to advance.
"I realized I shouldn't be losing," Joanlanne said. "So I just kept hitting the ball in play and hit it to her back hand more. She got everything back. She was really consistent too. She was a backboard; she got everything back.
"I kept moving around, mixing it up; throw a couple slices in there, back spins – just mixing it up."
Joanlanne said she practiced against Jadus but was unprepared for the level of competition her opponent was going to bring.
"I was caught off guard," Joanlanne said. "I was playing really well, and I guess she wasn't playing her best (when we practiced Sunday). I thought I had a clear shot. But she was playing really on top of her game."
Holy Redeemer's Fallyn Boich fell to Scranton Prep's Grace Reilly 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in quarterfinals. Top-seeded Kendra Croker swept Holy Redeemer's Nellie Chmil 6-0, 6-0.
Bowman was the lone WVC girls tennis athlete to advance to the District 2 Class 3A semifinals. Bowman, a No. 2 seed, knocked off Delaware Valley's Liz Caldwell 6-3, 6-4.
"I thought I kept cool and confident because it was kind of a tough opponent," Bowman said. "I just need to work on my own game. It's just my mistakes that could have made a difference."
Crestwood's Brittany Stanton lasted with Abington Heights' Tyra Abdalla but fell 6-2, 6-1 in quarterfinals.
