A voluntary evacuation is in effect for flood-prone properties along Nescopeck Creek in Butler Township, said township manager Maryanne Petrilla.
Petrilla said emergency workers are visiting properties encouraging residents to leave. The evacuation may become mandatory around noon if the creek rises, she said.
The impacted area is off state Route 309 near the Edgewood in the Pines golf course.
The American Red Cross will be opening an emergency shelter at Hazleton Area High School around noon, in part because of the potential for displaced motorists on nearby Interstates 80 and 81, Petrilla said.
