WILKES-BARRE – The city is in the market for a band shell to replace the one damaged in a storm last summer.

Request for proposals will be accepted until Feb. 11 for a covered mobile stage used publicly for city functions and rented for church bazaars, fairs and other outdoor events.

By soliciting responses, city officials will get an idea of what's available, new and used, and the corresponding prices, said Drew McLaughlin, city administrative coordinator.

The minimum specifications are for a band shell 8 feet wide, 47 feet long and 12 feet high with a gross vehicle weight of 17,000 pounds.

The John Jake Sauer Band Shell was toppled by high winds on June 22, while on loan for the Forty Fort 125th anniversary fair. The city used a stage donated by Mountain Productions of Wilkes-Barre for the rest of the year.

The cost of a replacement stage should be covered by Forty Fort's insurance, McLaughlin said. There might be some cost to the city, he added. This won't be paid out of the general fund necessarily, he said.

The band shell generates revenue through rental fees that could be put toward the cost, he said. Another source of revenue could come from naming rights.

If anyone wants to make a donation, the city is interested, McLaughlin said.

The new or used band shell could be on the road by next month, possibly for the St. Patrick's Day parade. But it all depends upon the response the city receives from the RFP, McLaughlin said.

Request for proposals

The city of Wilkes-Barre is seeking requests for proposals to buy a band shell. Proposals should be submitted to the City Clerk, Room 41, City Hall, 40 E. Market St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711 by 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 11. They will be opened publicly and read aloud at 10 a.m. that day.

Questions can be directed to Greg Barrouk at 208-4103.
