PLAINS TWP. – Plains Township police arrested a man early Wednesday morning several hours after Wilkes-Barre police allege he robbed Peter's Deli and Ice Cream on Blackman Street.
City police say Basheir F. Edwards, 19, of Madison Street, Wilkes-Barre, entered Peter's Deli at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, walked around the store for a few minutes and then approached a clerk with a gun and demanded money. The clerk told police Edwards cocked the gun to chamber a round.
Edwards was given cash and three packs of cigarettes before he fled the store, police said.
Township police stopped Edwards driving a vehicle at about 1:30 a.m. Police said the vehicle was reported stolen in Wilkes-Barre and a gun found inside the vehicle also was reported stolen.
Edwards was found in possession of the exact amount of cash taken in the robbery, police said.
City police charged Edwards with two counts of robbery and a single count of firearms not to be carried without a license.
Township police charged Edwards with two counts of receiving stolen property, and one count each of illegal possession of a firearm, firearms not to be carried without a license, unauthorized use of a vehicle, criminal trespass and driving without a license.
Edwards was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $100,000 bail.
Court records indicate Edwards failed to respond to citations of retail theft in April 2012, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness in August 2011, skipping school in February 2010 and retail theft in July 2009.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled on Dec. 18.
