It's been almost eight years since Tom Kostopoulos skated at the Mohegan Sun Arena. That was in 2005 as a member of the Manchester Monarchs. It's been almost 10 years since he skated here wearing a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton uniform - in 2003 before he was called up by Pittsburgh and never came back.
That will all change soon after the AHL Pens signed Kostopoulos, along with NHL veteran Mark Eaton, to 25-game PTO's on Wednesday.
I spoke to both prior to Wednesday's game and it was neat to see Kostopoulos walk the concourse of the arena, under his banner that hangs from the ceiling. Eaton noticed it to and said Kostopoulos is a legend here.
That certainly is true, considering he is the franchise leader in just about everything - games played, goal, points, etc.
What I find interesting about the arrival of Kostopoulos and Eaton is it that this Penguins roster has the most NHL games played in franchise history.
Think about it, Kostopoulos and Eaton have a combined 1,242 games of NHL experience. Add up the NHL games played by other players on the roster and it comes to 1,740.
I really don't think any other WBS Penguins roster had that much NHL experience. It's going to be interesting how the experience brought by Kostopoulos and Eaton improves this club while they're here.
At any rate, the additions are significant. The Penguins are getting their all-time leading scorer in Kostopoulos and a shutdown defenseman in Eaton who has 627 NHL games and a Stanley Cup ring to his credit.
Here's a breakdown of the Penguins who have NHL games:
1. Mark Eaton - 627
2. Tom Kostopoulos 615
3. Phil Dupuis - 116
4. Warren Peters - 96
5. Benn Ferriero - 92
6. Steve MacIntyre - 90
7. Dylan Reese - 74
8. Trevor Smith - 23
9. Brad Thiessen - 5
10. Carl Sneep and Joey Mormina - 1
