DALLAS — The Back Mountain Memorial Library announces the following events to be held in the next few weeks:

Saturday, May 9, 10:30 a.m.

“Expressing Your Personality in the Garden” workshop. Your garden is an expression of yourself. Jean Kolojejchick and Roseann Nardone, Luzerne County Master Gardeners, Penn State Extension, since 2005, and members of the Back Mountain Bloomers Garden Club will detail how to add plants, structures and accessories to your garden that reflect your personality. Call the library to pre-register.

Tuesday, May 12, 6 p.m.

Civil War Presentation: “American Theater During the Civil War” (A Commonwealth Speakers’ presentation) with Richard Sautter.

Sautter has been a theater professional for 10 years. He holds degrees in theater from Bates College, University of Exeter and Virginia Commonwealth University. He has taught at Penn State University – Lehigh Valley, Gettysburg College and Messiah College. Sautter’s two biographical one-man shows have been performed at colleges, theaters and libraries in several states. In addition, he has served as a historic interpreter in numerous locations and has trained living historians for Historic Philadelphia, Inc. and for the “Pennsylvania Past Players.” Sautter is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, the Voice and Speech Trainers’ Association and the Mid-America Theater Conference.

This program is made possible by a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the Luzerne County Library System.

Thursday, May 14, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child program will be held in the Children’s Room of the library. This year’s selection is “Number One Sam,” written and illustrated by Greg Pizzoli. Published in 2014 by Disney Hyperion Books, this story is about a competitive race-car driving dog who learns that some things are more important than being number one. This is the 10th year for this program that highlights the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers. All preschool children are welcome to attend. Call the library to register.

Each family will receive a paperback copy of the book, bookmarks, stickers and a family fun and activity guide.

During the month of May:

Visit the Back Mountain Memorial Library during the month of May (or any time) and have the opportunity to honor or remember a loved one (maybe for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day?) or a veteran with a personally- engraved brick.

The library offers both engraved memorial/honor Bricks and specially engraved veterans bricks. Each brick has a purchase price of $100 and you may complete an order form to personalize the brick.

Once engraved, the veterans bricks will be inserted in the Veterans’ Memorial area on the library grounds. The memorial/honor bricks are placed near the front entrance of the library.
