HARRISBURG — The Chesapeake Bay Foundation announced Kingston and Lehman townships received a combined total of $97,900 from the Department of Environmental Protect for stormwater improvement projects.

The DEP issued a total of $2.2 million in grants to finance 19 projects aimed at reducing stormwater runoff in the Susquehanna River watershed, Harry Campbell, executive director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, said in a news release Tuesday.

“Stormwater runoff is a significant source of nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment pollution that is damaging Pennsylvania rivers and streams,” Campbell said in the release. “These stormwater grants will be used for stream restoration, rain gardens, tree plantings and other projects that can reduce polluted runoff and be positive steps toward getting the commonwealth back on track to meeting its clean water commitments.”

Kingston Township will receive $35,400 to install a rain garden at the Center Street Park in Shavertown. Lehman Township will receive $62,500 to fund the construction of an infiltration trench on Jackson Road.

Jim Reino, chairman of the Kingston Township Board of Supervisors, was thrilled to hear the news.

“We have tried several times to apply for this grant,” Reino said.

Lehman Township representatives were unavailable for comment before deadline.
