The Warriors, in their first season as a program, took down Pittston Area, 12-11, on Monday in the opening round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District 2 Girls Lacrosse Championships. On Thursday, Wyoming Area fell to top-seed Wyoming Seminary, 17-2, to close out the season.

“We set goals at the beginning of the season and we surpassed each and every one of them,” DeLuca said. “I didn’t want them to worry about wins and losses.”

Against Pittston Area on Monday in Hughestown, Wyoming Area goalie Marcyssa Brown made 16 saves to help the Warriors take down their rivals. Just three weeks earlier, Pittston Area got the best of Wyoming Area, 18-12.

“It’s so exciting, especially as a senior,” Brown said following the win. “I’m excited to be part of it and we’re excited to advance.”

Wyoming Area junior Jordan Kelly finished with a game-high five goals, while teammate Claudia Waltz had three. Haley Norwillo, who was honored for her 100th career goal prior to the game, contributed four for the Patriots.

Wyoming Area opened the game with three straight goals — one by Waltz, one by Kelly and one by Carrie Pozaic. It wasn’t until almost seven minutes into the contest that Norwillo put the Patriots on the board for the first time.

Brown said that was due to the play of her defense in front of her.

“The defense played aggressive (Monday),” she said. “It took a lot of pressure off of me.”

With Brown putting up a solid wall, her counterpart, Pittston Area keeper Nicole Walters, wasn’t going to be outdone. Walters, a senior, stood tall most of the game and allowed the Patriots to keep the game close. Walters finished with 16 saves. She averaged around 20 saves per game throughout the regular season.

“She breaks my heart,” Pittston Area coach Leigha Dolcemascolo said. “I don’t know what we’re going to do without her next year. It’s going to be hard to replace her.”

Pittston Area started to catch fire midway through the first half.

Dana Zalewski and Abigail Rodriguez scored back-to-back goals to make it 4-3 in favor of the Warriors. However, Wyoming Area scored the next two from Kelly and Waltz. A four-minute scoring drought was ended when Waltz found the net with 27 seconds remaining in the first half and make it 7-5.

Norwillo scored with eight seconds remaining and Wyoming Area had a 7-6 lead into the half.

Both defenses settled down in the second half.

Pittston Area scored just four goals, while Wyoming Area scored five.

“These girls are amazing,” Dolcemascolo said. “To know I had this opportunity is amazing. It feels great to coach them and know I helped the girls reach their goals.”

The Patriots took their first and only lead when Bianca Mattei-Miller scored with 21:22 to play. A minute later, however, Wyoming Area’s Lindsey Pozaic tied it at eight. Wyoming Area went on to score three straight goals and never lost the lead.

According to Wyoming Seminary coach Catie Kersey, Wyoming Area gave the Blue Knights all they could handle on Thursday. Wyoming Seminary started the game on a 13-0 run and eliminated Wyoming Area, 17-2.

Brown finished with 14 saves on Wyoming Seminary’s 31 shots.

Wyoming Area wraps up its first girls lacrosse season in program history with a five wins and a district playoff victory.

“We stayed with the intensity all the way to the end,” DeLuca said. “I told the kids we were going back to a 0-0 score at halftime. (Wyoming Seminary) is an excellent team and move the ball very well. We wanted to learn from them.”

Waltz and Caitlin Butchko added the offense for Wyoming Area. Waltz scored WA’s first goal with five minutes to play in the first half. Butchko put Wyoming Area on the board in the second half five minutes in.

“I’m excited for them,” Kersey said of Wyoming Area’s program. “To be a first-year program at this point in the playoffs is exciting. They have a ton of enthusiasm. They don’t give up. My girls were huffing and puffing when they came off the field.”
