HAZLE TWP.: The Pennsylvania-Anthracite Section of Society of Mining Engineers/AIME is offering two John Kaminski Memorial Scholarships to Pennsylvania students who are majoring in mining-related engineering or science. One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior and another $500 scholarship will be given to an undergraduate of a college or university.

The grants are for enrollment and attendance in an engineering or science program related to mining at a school in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Graduating Senior Scholarship is a one-time only grant issued for freshmen attending their first semester in the fall of 2015. The College/University Undergraduate Scholarship is for High School Senior Scholarship winners and current undergraduate students and may be renewed upon application if satisfactory progress (3.0 GPA) towards an appropriate degree is maintained.

Information about the scholarship grants can be obtained from school guidance counselors or by contacting Pennsylvania Anthracite Section SME/AIME, John R. Ackerman, scholarship chairman, at [email protected].

The deadline for consideration for the 2015-16 scholarships is May 15.

A check for $500 for the fall semester will be delivered to the selected students at the section’s annual meeting and dinner in late June. The students and their parents will be guests of the society.

NANTICOKE: Luzerne County Community College is hosting a spring open house from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 11, at the college’s Campus Center.

General information and financial aid sessions will be held and tours will be given throughout the day. Various departments and programs will provide information through demonstrations and displays.

WILKES-BARRE: PPL Electric is hosting a community forum on energy conservation, innovative ways to save energy and updates on electric appliances that make homes more energy efficient at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, at the Solomon/Plains Educational Complex, 43 Abbott Street.

The hour-long forum is open to all members of the community and all participants will receive a free $40 energy kit. Participants will also help the Solomon/Plains Educational Complex receive an education grant by attending.

WILKES-BARRE: Wilkes University is hosting an information session for adults interested in pursuing advanced degrees or certifications in a variety of academic fields 6-8 p.m. on Monday, April 20.

Faculty will be available to discuss master’s degree programs in bioengineering, business administration, creative writing, education, electrical engineering, engineering management, mathematics, mechanical engineering and nursing. University staff will answer questions regarding financial aid and admissions procedures.

Master’s degree programs for educators include online teaching, school business leadership, instructional media, educational leadership, reading with reading specialist certification and teaching English to speakers of other languages. Wilkes also offers a variety of letter of endorsement and add-on certificate programs. Doctoral programs are available in education and nursing.

The information session begins with registration and refreshments in the second-floor ballroom of the Henry Student Center, 84 W. South Street. Free parking is available at the rear of the building.
