WILKES-BARRE – Rivals joined forces Friday night for 46th annual Dr. George P. Moses Wyoming Valley Conference Senior All-Star Classic.

Veteran Pittston Area coach Kathy Healey and rookie Wyoming Area coach Chad Lojewski and their coaching staffs guided one of the teams in the girls game that opened the basketball doubleheader at Holy Redeemer High School.

Team Healey fell to Team Gray, coached by Chris Gray from Meyers, 69-40, but Healey said the team accomplished the main objective of having fun.

Healey, who was joined by her assistants Joe Chacke and Mark Casper, and Lojewski, who was joined by Wyoming Area assistant Allison Wolfgang, have worked together with Rock Solid AAU basketball, but this was their first team coaching together in high school.

“It was nice coaching with Chad; I coach with him at The Rock,” Healey said. “And, it was nice Allison getting to coach with (daughter) Emily on the team.

“We’re rivals on the court, but off the court we share a lot of ideas. Especially with Chad being a new coach, we talked a lot about strategy.”

The coaches did not have any answers Holy Redeemer standout Allison Lewis, who earned Team Gray Most Valuable Player honors with 21 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Lewis was 9-for-13 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range, before missing three shots from long range late in the game.

Pittston Area had three of its players and Wyoming Area had one on Team Healey.

Allie Barber and Liz Waleski represented Pittston Area in the starting lineup, which included Wyoming Area’s Emily Wolfgang. Pittston Area’s Jordan Fritz also played.

Barber had four points, three rebounds and two assists. Waleski had three points, hitting a 3-pointer on a night when her teammates combined to go 2-for-23 from long distance, and added a rebound. Fritz had four points and four rebounds.

Wolfgang had two points, a rebound and a blocked shot.

Berwick’s Alexis Steeber had 10 points to lead Team Healey. Hanover Area’s Amber Grohowski had two points and team-highs of seven rebounds and two blocked shots to earn team MVP honors.

The Pittston Area, Wyoming Area, Berwick and Hanover Area players were joined by players from Nanticoke, Tunkhannock and Wyoming Valley West on Team Healey.

Meyers and Holy Redeemer players were joined by Crestwood, GAR, MMI Prep, Northwest, Wyoming Seminary, Hazleton Area and Lake-Lehman on Team Gray.

Uncharacteristic of all-star game play, Team Gray came out in a full-court trapping defense and scored eight straight points to erase Team Healey’s only lead of 2-0. Team Gray took control with a 10-point streak for a 28-16 lead with 2:34 left in the 20-minute half.

Cayle Spencer from Lake-Lehman won the 3-point shooting contest.
