MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — A memorial event is being held at an upstate New York veterans organization to commemorate the sacrifices of a group of World War II Army clergymen known as the Four Chaplains.
The U.S. transport ship Dorchester was carrying troops to Greenland when it was sunk by a German submarine on Feb. 3, 1943. Out of the more than 900 men aboard, only about 230 survived.
Four chaplains gave their life belts to four other men and went down with the ship. The chaplains were Catholic priest John Washington of Kearny, New Jersey; Rabbi Alexander Goode, a native of York, Pennsylvania; and ministers Clark Poling of Schenectady, New York, and George Fox of Gilman, Vermont.
The Four Chaplains commemoration is being held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the American Legion Post in Mechanicville, near Albany.
