PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A 40-year-old Philadelphia woman and her 5-year-old daughter are in critical condition after a house fire.

Emergency crews say the woman kept running back into the burning home trying to rescue the girl who was trapped in a second floor bedroom. Firefighters were able to reach the girl who was placed on ventilator at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children because of severe smoke inhalation.

The girl’s mother is also in critical condition and being treated at Aria-Torresdale Hospital. An off-duty officer who tried to help rescue the girl was also taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The names of the victims haven’t been released.

The fire was reported about 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The cause was still being investigated.
