WILKES-BARRE — A Juneteenth celebration will be held in Coal Street Park next month, according to an announcement from organizers.

Juneteenth is the annual celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, held on the anniversary of the day on which Union Army General Gordon Granger proclaimed enslaved people in Texas free on June 19, 1865.

Since then, the day has grown into a celebration of freedom of Black people from slavery nationwide.

Freedom Fighters will be holding a celebration on June 19 at Coal Street Park, held in collaboration with We Can’t Wait PA Statewide Coalition and United NEPA Alliance.

Held between noon and 3 p.m. at the Coal Street Park, the event will feature “free food, fun and fellowship,” according to a flyer for the event.
