WHITE HAVEN – The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will
dedicate a historical marker commemorating the Lehigh Path at 10 a.m. today at
Honey Hole Road in Nescopeck State Park. The state Department of Conservation
and Natural Resources is the marker’s local sponsor.

The Lehigh Path begins at the Forks of the Delaware and was a Native
American footpath.
Accounts dating back to 1758 say it was extremely difficult to navigate due
to steep mountains and rugged terrain. The path was used by men who carried
out the 1770 attack on Fort Durkee near Wilkes-Barre and combatants of the
Sugarloaf Massacre in 1780.

It followed a northwesterly course, passing through or near present-day
Lehighton, Jim Thorpe, Mountaintop and Wilkes-Barre, according to a news
release.
