SCRANTON – A 47-year-old Maryland man out of beer and marijuana allegedly hit his girlfriend in the face and attempted to smother her with a pillow at about 6 a.m. Sunday.

Police have charged David Raynor, of Baltimore, Md., with simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment after police say he hit his girlfriend Amy Sullivan at the Econo Lodge at 1175 Kane St., Scranton.

When police went to his room after speaking with Sullivan in the lobby, there was no response. They received a key from hotel staff, but Raynor was not inside, according to an affidavit.

In a written statement, Sullivan said her boyfriend became upset “because there was no more beer and because she could not get any pot.” He allegedly swore at her, hit her in the face, attempted to smother her, grabbed her by the neck and “swung her across the room.”

Raynor was arraigned March 13 and released on $5,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is set for March 21.
