The Rev. Joseph Simmons

    The Rev. Joseph F. Simmons, S.J., 65, associate campus minister at the
   
University of Scranton, died Wednesday in Moses Taylor HospitalA native of
Philadelphia, he came to the university as its first coordinator of commuter
affairs and chaplain to commuter students in 1984. He initiated several
programs to provide communication, information and counseling services to the
university’s large number of commuting students. He also conducted the search
retreat program in the Office of Campus Ministries and was a resident
counselor for students in Gavigan Hall.
   
Rev. Simmons was active in the Judaic Studies Institute and, as a member of
the American Professors for Peace in the Middle East, was part of a two-week
study mission to the Middle East in 1987 to explore options for peace in that
region.
   
He was a member of the American Association for Counseling and Development
and the National Association for Student Personnel Administrators.
   
He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, Philadelphia, and
then entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1946, in Wernersville. He
earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in English at
Loyola University of Chicago, a degree in philosophy at West Baden, Ind., and
a degree in theology at Woodstock College, Md.
   
Simmons served his regency at Loyola High School in Baltimore and his
tertianship in Muenster, Germany. He was ordained on June 22, 1958, at
Woodstock.
   
Prior to joining the Scranton Jesuit community, the Rev. Simmons held
administrative and faculty positions at Georgetown Prep in Washington, D.C.,
and St. Joseph’s Prep, where he was also rector. In addition, he served as the
superior at Carroll House, the Jesuit residence at The Catholic University of
America in Washington, D.C., and at Farmer House in Philadelphia.
   
Surviving are brothers, Dr. Bernard, Sarasota, Fla.; Richard, Westminster,
Md.; sister, Patricia Williams, Ocean City, N.J.
   
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the house chapel in
Campion Hall, 4 Ridge Row, Scranton.
   
A liturgy will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Houlihan-McLean Center,
corner of Jefferson and Mulberry Streets, Scranton.
   
Interment will be at St. Isaac Jogues Novitiate in Wernersville.
   
Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the Joseph Simmons,
S.J., Student Retreat Fund, University of Scranton, Linden and Monroe Streets,
Scranton.
