WILKES-BARRE — The Rite Aid store on Public Square will close on April 26. A sign posted on the entrance to the store notified customers of the closing and referred them to the nearby store at 155 E. Northampton St. to have their prescriptions filled.

The company said the closing is related to its regular review of stores to determine whether they are meeting the needs of customers, communities and overall business. Last December during a third-quarter earnings call, the company announced it would close approximately 63 stores, or approximately 2% of total locations across the country.

“A decision to close a store is one we take very seriously, and those decisions are based on a variety of factors that retail businesses consider such as overarching business strategy, lease and rent considerations, local business conditions and viability, and store performance,” the company said.

Where possible, store employees are transferred to other Rite Aid locations, the company said.
