LUZERNE – The third annual Back Mountain Trail 5k was the biggest one yet.
Nearly 800 area runners and walkers turned out for the New Year’s Eve event on Sunday, drawn by the chance to get one final 5K in before the calendar changed to 2024 or the lure of the popular hoodie sweatshirt the event gives participants.
Last year’s event drew about 500 runners, while the inaugural event in 2021 drew about 300 runners.
Runners took off from near the start of the Back Mountain Trail and headed into downtown Luzerne before turning back to the trail, finishing the run with an out-and-back course on the trail.
Proceeds from the event benefit area nonprofits, including the Back Mountain Trail, the North Branch Land Trust, Verve Vertu, Riverfront Parks, Kunkle Fire and Ambulance, Dallas Fire and Rescue, Trucksville Fire and Rescue, Luzerne Borough Fire and Ambulance, Back Mountain Fire and EMS, the Dallas Rotary, the Dallas Kiwanis, Food Diginity and the Wyoming Valley Striders Scholarship fund.
