WILKES-BARRE — A woman died as the result of a one-car crash Thursday evening, Luzerne County Coroner Bill Lisman confirmed.

According to police, a white Toyota slammed head-first into a traffic lightpost at Pennsylvania Avenue and Market Street, , in front of the Times Leader’s production building, at about 4:30 p.m. The front end of the vehicle was badly damaged and the airbag was deployed.

The female driver of the Toyota was taken to an area hospital, Wilkes-Barre police Sgt. Brett Smith said.

Lisman said the woman, no age given, died at a local hospital. Smith said she was “elderly.”

The accident is under investigation, Smith noted.

Although traffic lights at the intersection were not affected by the crash, the fire department directed traffic at and around the intersection.

Along with city police and fire, Medic 3 assisted. Falzone Towing removed the car from the scene.
