PITTSTON — Council members Wednesday approved requesting a hearing with the state Liquor Control Board to extend an exemption from the LCB’s rules on music.

According to city solicitor Sam Falcone, the city enforces noise violations for liquor licensed establishments within the business district of the city — which ranges from Kennedy Boulevard to Main Street — rather than the LCB.

“We have places like the Tomato Bar where there’s nothing around it, but they have a nice deck, and if they had music out there, technically that’s a violation,” Falcone said. “Cooper’s had the cabana, so technically by having any kind of sound on the cabana, that would be a violation.”

Falcone said the city met with the LCB several years ago about Pittston enforcing noise violations. That was approved for one year. Then, city officials met with the LCB again and it was approved for two years.

“Now, it’s time to go back for another one and we’re hoping it’ll be for a longer period of time,” Falcone added.

The meeting will be public, but the date, time and location are to be determined.

In other business:

• Councilman Danny Argo reminded those in attendance of the rededication ceremony for the Christopher Columbus statue to be held Sunday, Oct. 8 — the day before Columbus Day.

Argo noted the ceremony will begin at noon at the statue’s location on Kennedy Boulevard and will feature guest speakers and live entertainment.

He also said donations are currently being accepted to help with the event.

They can be sent to Pittston City Hall, 35 Broad St. Please note that it is for the rededication ceremony.
