HANOVER TWP. — Motorists using the Sans Souci Parkway might be wondering why the newly paved surface is being cut and orange cones separate thru lanes from work zones.

According to James May, a state Department of Transportation spokesman, the horizontal cuts in the pavement and necessary by design.

“Whenever you pave over concrete, you must cut the pavement where the concrete joints were and fill them with liquid asphalt,” May said. “It is necessary for the expansion and contraction of the concrete below so it doesn’t crack the asphalt.”

May said the $2.3 million resurfacing project is in progress and should be completed by early December. The project includes repair of the existing base pavement, milling and resurfacing. May said a total reconstruction of the parkway is will go out for bid in 2022.

A legal issue delayed the project in August/early September and a new contract was awarded. The original work started Aug. 5.

Road work on the Sans Souci Parkway started on Aug. 5, then was halted due to a legal threat. Work will continue through December.
