SCRANTON — The Lackawanna County Coroner has determined the cause of death for the 36-year-old woman who collapsed Sunday after crossing the finish line at the Scranton Half Marathon.

Lindsay Doherty, of Scranton, died from an intra-abdominal hemorrhage, according to Coroner Tim Rowlands, who classified the manner of death as natural causes.

Doherty, a wife and mother of three young children, was pronounced dead at Community Medical Center in Scranton after paramedics’ efforts to revive her at the race site were unsuccessful.

Doherty was employed as the EITC/OSTC coordinator for the Diocese of Scranton. She was in charge of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program, which provides need-based tuition assistance to students attending diocesan schools, and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit program, which provides scholarship assistance to eligible families.

Diocese spokesman Bill Genello said Doherty’s parish is hosting a prayer service for her 7:30 Monday night in St. Paul’s Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

This was the fourth annual half marathon in the city, and 2,346 runners completed the race. The 13.1-mile trek started at Scranton Memorial Stadium and traveled through downtown Scranton.
