Hazleton Area School District Superintendent Craig Butler will be leaving his post this summer to head a school district in Northampton County.

Directors at the Saucon Valley School District in Hellertown have announced they have selected Butler as their superintendent following a three-month search.

Butler was selected after a thorough process that involved visiting the district and meeting with groups of staff, district administrators, parents and community members, the school board said in a news release.

Butler began his education career in Tucson, Arizona, as an instrumental music teacher and athletic director, later worked in the Green River School District in Green River, Wyoming, as an assistant high school principal and then as high school principal until 1999. He then served 14 years as principal of State College High School before being appointed assistant superintendent at Hazleton Area in April 2013. He was promoted to superintendent in June 2015.

Butler, of Sugarloaf Township, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona. In 2009, he earned his Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Pennsylvania State University.

Butler will succeed Monica McHale-Small, who has been superintendent for Saucon Valley since 2014 and who is retiring this summer.

The Saucon Valley board is scheduled to vote on Butler’s hire with an annual salary of $158,000 on Tuesday night, according to lehighvalleylive.com.
