AVOCA — Marking a decade as the borough’s police chief, Dave Homschek was recognized by council Thursday.
Homschek was presented with a plaque by Mayor Robert Mullen and council president John Boone.
The recognition came as a complete surprise to Homschek, but he knew something was going on when his family walked into the room.
“I didn’t know what it was about at that point,” he said. “It was a total surprise.”
Mullen said he puts his complete trust in Homschek when he’s unable to be at the borough building.
“I’m here not that often, and it’s nice to know he’s running the show and I don’t have to worry about almost anything,” Mullen said. “I’ve talked to other officers and they like working with him, he’s great to them, and it’s nothing but good things.”
Homschek began working with the borough police force 16 years ago as a part-time officer before being named chief 10 years ago.
Boone said it’s his attitude that makes him a good fit for Avoca.
“Dave has served the borough selflessly,” he said. “He was born and raised here in town, his family’s from this town, and he’s certainly brought professionalism to the position of chief. He’s very well-respected with some of the other agencies he works with locally, and he’s very instrumental in finding grants and things like that. We’re happy to honor him.”
In other business, council members approved:
• The donation of $100 to the Pittston Area Baseball Booster Club.
• Increasing yard waste pickup from a bi-weekly to a weekly basis beginning in 2018.
