Growing up in the Back Mountain area, I spent the majority of my days fishing and hiking in the open spaces the area provided. I look back on those days with reverence and gratitude.

Today, I worry about whether my children will have the same chances to experience the wonder of the natural world as I once did.

About 19,000 miles of Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams are harmed by pollution. That impacts my enjoyment of these vital resource, but it also hurts our economy and even our health and welfare.

The state lags well behind in meeting its Clean Water Blueprint obligations, and our state and federal legislators must make clean water more of a priority.

That’s why I’m calling on U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-Moosic, and his colleagues to prioritize conservation funding in the federal Farm Bill. Pennsylvania needs more acres of stream-side trees, fewer cattle in the streams and healthier soils. The Farm Bill plays an incredible and necessary role in the fight for clean water by providing conservation assistance to farmers.

Continued support for conservation programs in the Farm Bill help pay for the important work of restoring and protecting our most precious resource.

Pennsylvania has a lot of work to do. By prioritizing conservation programs in the Farm Bill, Cartwright and other legislators can help us have clean water and productive farms.
