Virginia Thrasher of the United States took the first gold medal awarded at the Rio Olympic Games, in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event.

Thrasher, a 19-year-old from Springfield, Virginia, won a shootout to secure first place at the Olympic Shooting Center in Rio.
