LEHMAN TWP. — Almost on cue, as soon as Northwest built up any momentum, Marshall Woodrosky was there to steal its thunder.
Sure enough, Woodrosky’s special teams play helped Lake-Lehman avert a pair of scares from a pesky Northwest squad that hung around until the second half. The Black Knights prevailed 37-13 on Friday night in a battle between two neighboring programs.
Following an early Northwest lead, Woodrosky returned a kick 80 yards for a touchdown to give the Black Knights a slight 7-6 advantage.
Holding onto a slim 20-13 lead at halftime, Woodrosky performed his return magic again to start the third quarter. Woodrosky took the Rangers’ squib kick 71 yards downfield before being chased down by a tireless Northwest special teams player at the 5-yard line. His work led to a 25-yard Luke Spencer field goal that set the tone for Black Knights’ 17-0 shutout of the Rangers in the second half.
“This is two weeks in a row for Marshall,” Lake-Lehman coach Gerald Gilsky said. “He is a kid that comes in there. He just believes in this coaching staff. He is deceivingly fast, and he’s a tough kid.”
Northwest took the lead with 7:15 remaining in the first quarter. After giving up an interception deep in Black Knights’ territory, the quarterback-turned-defensive back Ryan Wassel redeemed himself by picking up a bouncing ball on a fumbled reception and took it 29-yards for a touchdown.
Zack Kojadinovich had no troubles in extending Lake-Lehman’s lead to 13-6 with a 2-yard rush with 1:34 left in the quarter.
The Rangers evened the score at the 8:09 mark of the second quarter. This time, Wassel called his own number and sneaked right for a 20-yard touchdown.
Kojadinovich had his second touchdown with a 5-yard score before the half expired. He finished with 57 yards on 13 carries.
The Lake-Lehman defense capitalized on a pair of goal line stands to keep the Northwest offense without any points. On the latter of the two, Damian Concklin burst through the offensive line and rattled the quarterback at the 2-yard line, disrupting their fourth down play call.
“It was a great effort,” Gilsky said. “Guys were fighting. They weren’t being allowed to score. You look at that and you see that, what they run offensively, you don’t know who is going to get the ball, per se.”
Ethan Adams threw for 126 yards for Lake-Lehman. Receiver Ryan Eiden, who returned an interception for a touchdown, caught six passes for 73 yards.
Northwest’s George May had 119 yards on 25 carries.
