HANOVER TWP. — Driven by a heartbreaking defeat that spoiled one perfect season, Mohammad Chesson vows to do his best to make up for it with another run at perfection.

So far, so good.

Chesson won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes and added a fourth victory as part of the 1,600 relay team Wednesday as Hanover Area got off to another flying start by besting Berwick, 86-63 in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys track meet at Hanover Area High School.

“They have a fantastic distance team,” Hanover Area coach Al West said. “We got them in sprints.”

Chesson got geared up for this season quickly.

The leader of a Hanover Area team that went 6-0 before losing the WVC Division 2 title to rival Meyers in the final meet of last season, Chesson is back with the Hawkeyes trying to chase down one that got away.

“It is definitely a motivating factory,” said Chesson, who won four times in both meets this season while pacing the Hawkeyes boys to a 2-0 start. “We lost to Meyers by one or two points. It was right there. I lost in the 400. If I would have won that race, we would have been undefeated.

“That is definitely a motivating factor for me.”

The biggest factor in the girls meet was Berwick thrower Payden Montana, who led the Bulldogs past Hanover Area, 94-46, by winning all three throwing events.

In the process, Montana — who was a starter on Berwick’s girls basketball team before giving up that sport to compete in indoor track this past winter — set two school records. She now has the farthest shot put throw of 43-2.5, the farthest discus throw of 128-1 and was just a few inches shy of another school mark while wining the javelin with a throw of 114-8.

“She wanted to hold the record in all three events at our school,” Berwick coach Bob Calarco said. “She broke two of them again (Wednesday).”

Berwick, now 2-0 in Division 2 of the WVC, also leaned on four-time winner Megan Dalo, who captured the triple jump, the long jump and ran on two winning relays. And distance runner Samantha Dyer took the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

The Hanover Area boys also received three wins from Zakee Nettles, who captured the 110 hurdles, pole vault and ran with Chesson on the 400 relay. And the Hawkeyes swept all the field events, led by Brandon Chafin’s victories in the long jump and triple jump.

“You’ve got to have the mindset to succeed,” Chesson said. “All of our athletes are there. No breaks this season.”
