BERWICK — With the ball in her hands and the game on the line, Erin Gibbons has developed a habit of making magic happen for Wyoming Valley West.

And when she did it again Saturday, it sent the Spartans straight back to the top of their division.

Gibbons drilled three 3-point field goals in the final 12 minutes, the last a dagger with 34 seconds to play in overtime that erased a whole game of Berwick dominance and lifted Valley West to a 48-44 victory over the heartbroken Bulldogs.

“I knew I had to step up,” Gibbons said. “I’m a senior, I’m a captain. Some of the younger players may have been a little nervous. I needed to step up to help us win. I was standing there (in overtime), I got the ball, I heard coach say ‘Shoot.’

“I think I get confidence when I have the ball, knowing I need to make shots for my team.”

Her shooting spree in the fourth quarter and overtime stepped on Berwick’s upset hopes, and may have stomped out any chance the Bulldogs had of making a run at the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 title.

They fell to 6-3 in league play and into a third-place tie with Wyoming Area — three games in the loss column behind 9-0 Nanticoke and 8-0 Holy Redeemer — with seven games remaining on their league schedule.

Valley West, meanwhile, shrugged off an ugly 20-point loss to Holy Redeemer on Thursday and moved right back into a first-place tie with Pittston Area at 7-2 in the WVC Division 1.

“I knew it was going to be a tough one,” Valley West coach Gary Ferenchick said. “But we needed to get this one.

“This one was a big one.”

Berwick didn’t make it easy.

The Bulldogs controlled most of the game to the final three minutes of regulation, holding a four- to five-point lead for the most part.

Then Gibbons struck.

Held to eight points in the loss to Holy Redeemer and six points through three quarters by Berwick’s dogged defense, Gibbons scored all nine points for Valley West in the final eight minutes of regulation.

And she buried her second 3-pointer of the fourth quarter to give the Spartans their first lead of the afternoon — 43-40 — with 2:26 remaining in regulation.

“I got a little frustrated when my shots weren’t falling,” said Gibbons, one of the WVC’s top scorers and 3-point shooters whose late-game shooting heriocs lifted Valley West to a win over Scranton in last season’s District 2 playoffs and to an early run-away win over nemesis Hazleton Area this season. “But I knew I could make them.”

She made a free throw to give Valley West a four-point lead with under two minutes to play, but even then, Berwick kept battling.

Reese Mensinger converted two free throws to give the Bulldogs a chance, then Tori Talanca dropped home a layup off an inbounds play as time expired in regulation to tie the game at 44-44 and send the teams to overtime.

“But we got four more minutes at the end,” Gibbons said. “It wasn’t over.”

And Berwick didn’t get many chances to score again.

Led by the dribbling of Gibbons, Valley West ran more that 2:30 off the clock during the four-minute overtime period.

“I was dribbling and they weren’t guarding me,” said Gibbons, who finished with a game-high 18 points. “I thought, ‘Take some time off the clock, get a good shot.’”

Then Gibbons dropped the dagger, nailing her third 3-pointer to put the Spartans up 47-44 with 34 seconds remaining on the overtime clock.

“I think it’s the adrenalin,” Ferenchick said of his shooting star. “She’s a great team leader. And she’s one heck of a player.”

And the play of Gibbons down the stretch not only helped Valley West recover from a stinging defeat, but put the Spartans right back in the hunt for a division championship.

“It was a good win,” Gibbons said. “Our last game, we got down early. All of our losses, we forget about those and move on to the next game. I think we really needed this intense, hyper game to realize we can do this.”
