PENN LAKE PARK — Police said a body was discovered Tuesday at Penn Lake.

Construction workers in the area reportedly saw the body tangled in lily pads about 15-feet off the shoreline. Officials say the body was that of a 37-year-old man in cutoff jeans. He was later identified as David Adam Young, of Wilkes-Barre.

“We are doing a full investigation to make sure it’s an accident,” White Haven Police Chief Thomas Szoke said. White Haven police are contracted to provide police coverage in Penn Lake Park and Dennison Township.

Szoke said he was not sure why the victim would have been in the area because the lake is privately owned.

Szoke said a group of construction workers working on a house near the beach called in the body.

Juan Canizares, one of the construction workers, said they came to work around 8 a.m. but didn’t see the body because they were working on the first floor of the home. But when they went to do work on the second floor balcony, he said, the workers spotted something floating in the water.

“A lot of things pass through your mind,” Canizares said about his reaction to realizing the object was a deceased human being.

Canizares said there were a few people on the lake, including a lady who was tanning and some people cleaning, but no one else saw the body.

“You never think you come to work and find a body in the water,” Canizares said. “It’s a surprise for everybody.”

An X-ray and toxicology test will be done on the body by the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office, officials said.

Pennsylvania State Police, White Haven fire, ambulance and police, Valley Regional fire and dive team, along with Wright Township police assisted with the investigation.

The lake will be closed until Wednesday morning, officials said.
