AVOCA — The borough council paid their respects to the late Councilman Tom Fritz, who died Sunday after his battle with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or HCM, at Thursday’s monthly meeting.

Fritz was 54.

Members of council and the audience held a moment of silence at the beginning of the meeting for Fritz.

Council President John Boone said a special meeting will be held within one to two weeks to fill the vacancy.

Boone said he’ll miss Fritz’s dedication to the borough and his willingness to serve others.

“Tom was a hard worker,” he said. “From my aspect as a councilman, he was a guy that brought things to table, but he was beyond bringing problems. He generally brought solutions, or he worked toward a solution. He was a great man with dedication to the town and to the children.”

Also during the meeting, Boone provided another update on the status of the new borough building, saying that it was would be another month or two until it could be occupied.

He said the building still has to undergo inspections, new furniture has to be purchased, water has to be connected and an occupancy permit has to be acquired.

“The light is almost shining on us,” said Boone. “We’re almost in it.”

Also during the meeting, council members approved holding a Prescription Drug Takeback event at the grand opening of the new borough building. The event will be held by members of the Pittston Area Leo Club.

In other business, council members approved:

• The payment of $12,500 to Ed Krasavage Construction to correct sewer issues in the 200 block of Main Street.

• A donation of $100 in Fritz’s memory to the Avoca/Dupont Little League baseball team toward its bingo event on Oct. 22.

• A payment of $1,540 to Matheson Transfer Co. to move items from the current borough building to the new borough building.

• the rehiring of 21 part-time police officers for the months of October, November and December.
