EXETER — The Wyoming Area boys volleyball program has been defunct for several years, but one resident has asked the school board about possibly bringing it back.

Bill Schutter, of Harding, spoke to the Wyoming Area School Board members during their monthly meeting Thursday about what can be done to revive the program.

He spoke about coaching the girls junior varsity team this past season and how it reignited his desire to coach volleyball, something he had not done in 25 years.

“I stepped in in the middle of the season with the girls’ program and had a blast with it,” Schutter told the board members. “I would like to bring back the boys’ program; I know it’s been gone for quite a number of years and I know it can’t happen this spring — it’s too short of notice. But, I’d like to know what we can do, or what steps can be taken, to bring it back for 2018.”

Schutter also mentioned that he once coached the boys’ program years before it disbanded due to lack of interest several years ago, and it was a successful program.

He said he talked to Athletic Director Joe Pizano, who told Schutter to mention it to the board members.

Wyoming Area Superintendent Janet Serino said the board and Pizano will talk about possibly bringing back the program.

“I’ll have him come and talk to the board, and we’ll take it from there,” she said.

School board members also decided not to seek a tax exemption from the Act 1 Taxpayers Relief Act.

The Act 1 index is calculated by the state Department of Education and does not allow taxes to be raised above 3.4 percent in Wyoming Area.

“We’re holding it to the index,” said School Board President Elizabeth Gober-Mangan. “I believe, and I think my team believes, enough is enough. So, we want to see what’s going to happen with the state, the governor with what he’s going to do and how that impacts financing.”

Gober-Mangan said she does not forsee the school district going over the index.

“We’re locked in,” she said. “We locked ourselves to 3.4 or under.”
