ASHLEY — Several people are displaced after a fire ravaged a double block structure early Sunday morning.
According to Luzerne County 911, the first calls for the fire at 31-33 S. Main St., came out at 1:05 a.m.
The fire had a “good start” on Ashley first responders, assistant fire chief Wes Saltz said. Though crews are stationed less than five blocks away, Saltz said the fire had been through the roof when responders arrived less than three minutes after the initial call.
As first responders battled the blaze, parts of the roof which were still on fire, would fall onto Main Street. Flames and smoke were also seen from a mile away.
By 5:30 a.m. North Main Street at Hazelton Street and South Main Street at Planes Avenue were still blocked off while crews continued to fight the fire.
Crews from Hanover Township, Nanticoke, Fairview Township, Plymouth and Kingston assisted Ashley while fighting the two-alarm fire.
“Thanks for everyone’s support,” Saltz said noting how difficult the fire was.
A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal will conduct the investigation on what sparked the fire.
According to a UGI power outage map, 441 customers throughout Ashley were without power until approximately 5 a.m when crews were able to return the power to surrounding homes.
In an email from Dave Skutnik, Regional Communications Manager for the American Red Cross, Skutnik said the Red Cross “is providing emergency assistance” to the two families displaced in the fire.
