BERWICK — Talen Energy will test sirens Thursday that are part of the Susquehanna nuclear plant emergency notification system. The sirens are within a 10-mile radius of the nuclear power plant in Salem Township.

According to a press release, the annual test will begin at 11 a.m., with the sirens sounding once continuously for three straight minutes with a steady tone.

In the press release, it is emphasized that the public does not need to respond to the test in any way. Local Emergency Alert System radio and television stations will broadcast a message about the test once the sirens begin to sound. Emergency notifications may also be sent to mobile phones.

“Testing the sirens is an annual requirement that helps us ensure the station’s emergency warning system is working properly,” said Jim Gorman, Talen Energy’s emergency preparedness manager.
